When רב ברוך came down with the flu and couldn’t see visitors, הירשל אוסטרופולר quickly put on the רב’s clothing, sat in his chair and made himself the רבי. After a short while, a distraught woman came to see the “רב” to ask for a ברכה for her pregnant daughter, who had miscarriages in two previous pregnancies. הירשל told her to ask the רבנית for a pair of his underwear and give them to her daughter to smell every day until she gives birth. The woman did as she was told and there was a תשועה for the daughter. When רב ברוך heard about this, he asked הירשל to tell him the source for this סגולה. “It’s a גמרא מפורשת” said הירשל. It says: “לא הפילה אשה מריח בשר-הקדש.”
