One day, when ר׳ אייזל חריף, a גדול בתורה ויראה , was late for שחרית, a wealthy member of the קהילה said that they should begin without the רב. When people objected, the man went before the תיבה and began the תפילה. The רב arrived a few minutes later and afterwards said to the מתפללים: “I had always wondered why in תפילת שחרית we say שתצילנו היום ובכל יום מעזי פנים ומעזות פנים. After all, we pray every day and so it seems that it would be sufficient to say שתצילנו היום. Why do we add ובכל יום? This morning the question was answered for me. It’s designed for those occasions when the עזות פנים occurs before the תפילה.”
