Mendel was ready to go to bed when his wife told him that she heard whispering in the kitchen. Mendel listened and heard the voices as well. He immediately called the police and was told that no one was available at the moment. “Lock yourself in the bedroom and we’ll have someone come as soon as possible,” the dispatcher said. Mendel hung up and within seconds called again and said “No need to rush. I shot them.” Within two minutes three squad cars, sirens blaring, pulled up to the house. The police arrested the burglers and turning to Mendel asked “Didn’t you say you shot them?” He replied: “Didn’t you say no one was available?”
