A collector rang Mr. Gurstein’s doorbell. Gurstein was a very wealthy man who had never given money to any Jewish cause. When he opened the door, the collector explained that the local Yeshiva was in dire straits and that he was soliciting much needed contributions. Gurstein responded that he was not Jewish. But, the collector said, our records indicate that while you may not be active in the Jewish community, you are Jewish. No, Gurstein insisted, “I’m not Jewish, my father isn’t Jewish and my grandfather, alav hashalom, wasn’t Jewish either.”
