One afternoon, the רב in a small town was visited by a stranger. After the introductions, the רב asked “How can I help you?” The man replied: “Life is very tough for some. I thought you should be aware of the problems facing one of your מתפללים.” After a pause, he continued: “Mr. Rabinowitz owes a money lender $5,000 and doesn’t have the money to pay. He’s too ill to work, can’t feed his children, and is being thrown out of his house this week.” “That’s awful,” said the רב. “I’ll raise some money from the Shul and I’ll contribute as well. But tell me; are you a relative of Mr. Rabinowitz?” “No,” the man responded. “I’m the moneylender.”
