A Jew whose daughter got engaged tried every which way to raise money for the wedding, to no avail. Desperate, he decided to write a letter to the רבונו של עולם, explaining the state he was in and asking for Devine intervention in raising $50,000. He put the letter in an envelope, affixed postage and put it in the mailbox. When a clerk at the post office saw to whom it was addressed, he took the liberty of opening the envelope and reading the letter. When done, he reinserted the letter, resealed the envelope and sent it to Rothschild. Seeing that it was addressed to אלוקים, Rothschild read and was moved by the plea, sending the fellow Jew $40,000 for the wedding. A year later, the man’s second daughter got engaged and, again lacking the funds for the wedding, he wrote to השם asking for assistance. “אלוקים, thank you for the money for my first daughter’s wedding,” he wrote, “I’ve done everything possible to raise the $50,000 I need for my second daughter’s wedding, but have been unsuccessful. Please help me again. P.S. This time, please don’t have the money go through Rothschild. He takes a 20% fee.”
