A young man and his father-in-law went to a רב to resolve their dispute. The young man began: “רבי,” he said. “When I married his daughter, he promised me three years of מזונות. I was with him for two years and left him a year ago. I now want the two years of מזונות that he owes me.” Surprised, the רב said: “But if you lived with him for two years, your claim is only for the third year.” The young man replied: “No, רבי. I’m willing to forgo מזונות for the year I was on my own. I just want the מזונות for the two years I put up with him.”
