Shopping for a suit, a customer was told by the salesman that the price is $500. “I can’t afford $500,” he said. “I’m a long-time friend of Mr. David, the owner. Tell him it’s me and see what he can do.” The salesman went to see the owner and offered the suit for $400. The customer said that was still too much for him, that he knew Mr. David for 35 years and wanted a larger discount. Finally, he was told that the bottom, bottom line was $300. The customer agreed to the price but said that he would have to take it on credit. Two months passed and he failed to pay a dime. Mr. David went to see him, demanding that he pay up. “I don’t have the money,” his friend said. “I’m really sorry, but I can’t pay.” “Then why did you bargain so hard?” Mr. David asked. “I didn’t want you to have a big loss,” the customer responded.
