An עני came to an עשיר for צדקה. When the wealthy man turned him down, the עני told him “בן עיר זו אני.” The עשיר responded that couldn’t be true because everyone in town knows that he doesn’t give צדקה to עניים. Therefore, he must be from another town and עניי עירך קודם.
