Rebbi השיל was asked: The גמרא says that כסף מטהר ממזרים. How is it possible that the power of money is stronger than the power of the תורה, which teaches that ממזרים are טמאים? The רבי explained: “We say that מדחציף כולי האי, שמע מינה ממזר הוא. This refers to someone who is a plain חצוף. But this חזקה does not apply to a rich חצוף because, as משלי teaches, עשיר יענה עזות even if he’s not a ממזר. And this is why we say כסף מטהר ממזרים. The חוצפה of an עשיר can be attributed to his wealth and is not necessarily a sign of ממזירות.”
