Today’s דף relates that ר׳ יונתן בן עמרם said that he is neither amongst the בעלי מקרא nor the בעלי משנה, but asked that he be supported ככלב וכעורב, like a dog or a raven. The תורה says that נבילה should be thrown to the dogs as a reward על לא יחרץ כלב לשונו when the Jews left מצרים. This demonstrates that the dogs are given שכר for שב ואל תעשה. It was in reference to this that ר׳ יונתן בן עמרם asked to be supported ככלב וכעורב.
