When Sir Moses Montefiore came to ירושלים on one of his visits, he generously distributed money to all the חכמים in the city. Unfortunately, however, there was one he mistakenly overlooked. The חכם came to him the following day and asked why he had been passed over. Montefiore apologized and said he felt really bad about it but he had spent all his funds and had nothing left to give him. The חכם responded: “רב משה, perhaps you tell me how much and I’ll lend it to you.”
