A שידוך was proposed between Hershel and the daughter of a famous רב who asked to meet the young scholar.  “I’ve heard that you are a בקי בש״ס and that you can present קושיות and תירוצים without preparation,” said the רב.  “You’ve heard correctly,” responded the young man.  The רב picked up a גמרא and turned to the blank page before the שער.  “What קושיות and תירוצים can you present here?” he asked.  Hershel raised his hand and moved his thumb back and forth as if he were saying פלפול, but didn’t say a word.  “I don’t hear anything,” said the רב.  “I don’t see anything,” said Hershel.
