An elderly Jew traveled to ארץ ישראל to live out his remaining years and to be buried in its soil. Not many years passed before his money was gone and he returned with empty pockets to where he had come from. In reaction to this, רבי אייזל חריף remarked to the old man: “The גמרא says יש לך אדם שממונו חביב עליו מגופו. This concept, that there are people who value ממונם more than גופם, is hard to grasp. But it seems that the גמרא was referring to people like you. You traveled to ארץ ישראל for the burial of your body in its soil. Instead, you buried your money there and returned your body here. It thus turns out that you value ממונך more than גופך.”
