A למדן was asked: “We learned in a משנה at the end of מסכת סוטה that בעקבתא דמשיחה חוצפא יסגי, namely that brazenness will be widespread as משיח arrives.  Now, how is this possible?  חוצפא is a trait of the wealthy, as stated in משלי that העשיר יענה עזות.  Yet, in סנהדרין our חכמים tell us that אין בן דוד בא עד שתכלה פרוטה מן הכיס.  Thus, there is a contradiction because if no one has money and there are no עשירים, then contrary to what מסכת סוטה says, there won’t be חוצפא when משיח comes.”  The למדן responded:  “עזות פנים is not the exclusive domain of the עשירים.   In מסכת סנהדרין, the גמרא relates that ר׳ נהוראי said about the generation that בן דוד בא that ופני הדור כפני כלב and as we know, the כלב has two חסרונות simultaneously: he is both an עני and an עזות פנים, as the חכמים said in מסכת שבת: לעת עני מכלבא and as ישעיהו said והכלבים עזי נפש.  Thus, the poor can also be כלבים and חצופים.”
