In a conversation with רב צבי הירש לוין in Berlin, a חילוני Jew said that he is still traditional.  On שבועות, for example, he eats חלבי and puts green branches in his house.  The following year, he became completely Reform and abandoned even these traditions.  רב צבי הירש told him that the גמרא supports his position.  Surprised, the man asked what the גמרא says.  The רב explained: “If a claim is made against a person for a debt not having been paid, he has to take a שבוע if he is מודה במקצת.  But if he is כופר בכל, he is not required to take a שבוע.  Therefore, in the prior year, when he was stillמודה במקצת, he was חייב בשבועות.  But now that he is כופר בכל, he is no longer חייב בשבועות.”
