When רב נפתלי מרופשיץ taught his students the מדרש that הקדוש ברוך הוא showed אדם and משה רבינו all the coming generations, דור דור ודורשיו, דור דור ושופטיו, one of the students asked why did ה׳ first show him the generations, rather than first showing him the leaders of each generation? רב נפתלי answered: “We know that the face of משה was כפני חמה, the face of יהושוע was כפני לבנה, and the brilliance of the leaders of each successive generation was dimmer and dimmer. If הקדוש ברוך הוא would have shown me to משה רבינו as the leader of this generation, he would have screamed in shock. Therefore, He first showed him the דור and only afterwards the leaders of that דור.”
