When רבי השל was still studying in חדר, he returned home one day to find that his dinner consisted of the head and tail of a fish. The next morning, his father saw the boy open the סידור for שחרית, but he only said מה טובו and then skipped everything else until עלינו. “What kind of תפילה is that?” his father asked. The young השל answered: “If the head and the tail are considered a complete fish, then מה טובו and עלינו are a complete תפילה.”
