When the חוזה מלובלין heard that there was a Jew who every Friday afternoon was distributing combs to the poor men at the מקוה, he said יהי חלקי עמו. מצוה גדולה בידו. This was told to רב עזריאל ברזל׳, who immediately stated יש ראיה מהגמרא שאין זו מצוה. He cited today’s דף, which states that דוד המלך עמד במרחץ ונצטער על שהוא ערום מן המצוות. “Now, if handing out combs is a מצוה,” he said, “דוד המלך could have bought combs and handed them out to the poor. His failure to do so demonstrates that it’s not a מצוה.” These remarks were related to the חוזה, who responded: במחיצת כבוד תורתו הגדולה, it appears that a משנה מפורשת escaped the attention of רב עזריאל. The משנה in Sanhedrin ב,ה states מלך אין רואין אותו…כשהוא בבית המרחץ. שנאמר ׳שום תשים עליך מלך׳, so that fear of him shall be on you. Accordingly, it is certain that דוד המלך had a private מקוה and thus could not hand out combs to the poor.”
