A דיין who generally was מקיל in his rulings met up with a דיין who generally was מחמיר. It was ערב יום הכיפורים.  The מקיל said to the מחמיר: “On the coming holy day, you need רחמים more than me.”  When asked for an explanation, he said: “If I חלילה make a mistake in a פסק הלכה, I’ve been מתיר something that’s אסור and that’s  בין אדם למקום שיום כיפור מכפר עליה.  But if you חלילה make a mistake in a פסק הלכה and you were פוסל something that is כשר, you’ve caused נזק to a fellow Jew and that’s an  עבירה שבין אדם לחבירו, for which יום הכיפורים is not מכפר until he appeases his fellow “
