A man who liked כבוד asked his רב: “The חכמים said ‘כל הרודף אחר הכבוד, הכבוד בורח ממנו’, so why is it that even though I flee from כבוד, the כבוד doesn’t run after me?” The רב answered: “When you run from the כבוד, you keep looking behind your shoulder to see if the כבוד is running after you and when the כבוד sees this, it’s concerned that perhaps you’ll run after it.”
