A חזן was praying מוסף of יום טוב. As he got to ומפני חטאינו, and raised his voice as he said ואין אנחנו יכולים, one of the מתפללים remarked: “In מסכת יומה it states: מכסה פשעיו לא יצליח. Elsewhere, it states: אשרי נשוי פשע כסוי חטאה. Thus, one פסוק says that sins can be concealed and the other says they cannot. How is this contradiction resolved? The גמרא explains that there is no קשיא. One case deals with a חטא מפורסם and the other deals with a חטא that is not מפורסם. And the חזן who takes payment from the ציבור even though שאינו יכול להתפלל, is stealing from the ציבור and is therefore committing a חטא מפורסם which he can’t hide and it is therefore fitting that he publicly declares ואין אנחנו יכולים.”
