A Jewish woman lived next door to a משומד. Every day as she davened and said תהילים, he would harass her and argue that her prayers were worthless. But she kept on praying. One day, she ran out of groceries and didn’t know where she would get the money to put food on the table. Hearing her tefillos to the רבונו של עולם, the משומד thought to himself “I’ll fix her.” He went to the supermarket, bought a wagonload of groceries, placed them on her front porch, rang the doorbell and then hid in the bushes to see what she would do. When she opened the door and saw the groceries, she let out cries of thanks to השם. The משומד then jumped out of the bushes and told her “You crazy lady. G-d didn’t deliver those groceries. I bought them.” Hearing this, her praise of השם grew even louder and more intense. “רבונו של עולם,” she said, “I knew You would answer my prayers and give me the food for my family. I just didn’t know that you were going to make the משומד pay for it.”
