R’ פנחס הלוי, the author of הפלא on Halacha, when asked how he could rule against positions taken by certain earlier גדולים, said:  “When I come before the בית דין של מעלה, those קדושים will litigate with me for not agreeing with their positions.  I will set forth my explanations and whether I will persuade them or not, at least I will have the satisfaction of arguing תורה with גדולים.  However, if I have to litigate with some chicken or בהמה that I ruled טריף, even if I win, I wouldn’t be pleased at having to go to דין with a בהמה.”
